Descrição da Quinta de Belas (Description of Belas Manor) constitutes the first modern edition of the only prose text written by Domingos Caldas Barbosa. Towards the close of his life he strolls in the Manor known at its height, at the end of the 18th century, as the Portuguese Parnassus. He describes the beauty of its gardens, orchards and monuments with historical notes evidencing their author’s erudition. In addition to the transcript of the original text this book contains
a Botanical Glossary including all plants described by the author, as well as a Historical-Artistic Study of the 700 years of the property in question. It closes with pictures of the Manor in present times. Lisbon, 2019.
